Postbiotics, the Gut-Brain Axis, and Why SuperGravy® Was Already Ahead of the Pack
By Anthony Bennie, Founder & Chief Nutrition Officer, Clear Conscience Pet®
At Clear Conscience Pet®, we believe better nutrition begins with deeper thinking.
That means we do not wait for trends to become popular before paying attention. We study, listen, formulate carefully, and look for meaningful ways to bring advanced nutritional concepts into everyday products dogs truly enjoy.
That is why recent reporting from Pet Food Industry magazine about postbiotics and the gut-brain axis caught our attention.
The article discussed new research presented at Petfood Forum 2026 suggesting that postbiotics may help support calmer physiological responses in dogs under stress, including during a simulated thunderstorm test.
For us, this research was not just interesting. It was deeply affirming.
Last year, before this report was released, Clear Conscience Pet upgraded our industry-first Trigestive™ Gut Health Complex — originally built around probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes — into our new Quadragestive™ Gut & Immune Support Complex, adding postbiotics as the fourth pillar of digestive and whole-body wellness.
Once again, SuperGravy® was already moving in the direction emerging pet nutrition science is now helping to validate.
What Are Postbiotics?
Most dog parents have heard of probiotics. These are beneficial live microorganisms associated with digestive health. Prebiotics help feed beneficial gut bacteria. Digestive enzymes help break down food so nutrients can be more effectively used.
Postbiotics are different.
They are not live organisms. They are beneficial compounds or carefully prepared non-living microbial ingredients that may help support gut balance, immune function, and overall wellness.
Because postbiotics are not alive, they may be more stable under processing conditions than traditional live probiotics. That matters in pet foods, treats, and supplements where heat, pressure, extrusion, or retort processing can reduce the effectiveness of more fragile functional ingredients.
But stability is only part of the story.
Why Cold Processing Matters
Postbiotics may be more processing-stable, but live probiotics and digestive enzymes are not.
Live probiotics can be killed by heat. Once destroyed, they are no longer functioning as live beneficial microorganisms.
Digestive enzymes are also highly sensitive to heat. Cooking can denature enzymes, meaning their active structure is changed. Once denatured, they may become little more than ordinary proteins, losing the active mechanisms that make enzymes such a powerful part of the digestive process.
That is why all four SuperGravy® formulas are cold processed.
SuperGravy® was never designed to be just a tasty powder with impressive-sounding ingredients sprinkled on the label. From the beginning, it was built around purposeful nutrition. Cold processing helps protect the functional integrity of the live probiotics and active digestive enzymes in our formulas.
That is also why our labels include guaranteed amounts of key functional components, including probiotics, digestive enzymes, and prebiotics.
Now, with postbiotics added, our Quadragestive™ Gut & Immune Support Complex brings together four complementary pillars:
- Probiotics
- Prebiotics
- Digestive enzymes
- Postbiotics
That four-way functionality is not window dressing. It is a deliberate nutritional system designed to bring dogs both healthy joy and meaningful daily support.
Honest Functionality: Why Sliders® Are Different, Too
Sliders® Four-Way Functional™ Baked Beef Treats were also ahead of the trend by including both prebiotics and postbiotics as part of their purposeful gut and immune support design.
That choice reflects the same nutritional philosophy behind SuperGravy®: ingredients should fit the product format and remain meaningful after processing.
Because Sliders® are baked treats, we do not include live probiotics or active digestive enzymes in them. Baking would kill live probiotics and denature active enzymes, making them essentially useless.
Instead, Sliders® use functional ingredients that make sense in a baked treat format, including prebiotics and postbiotics that are better suited to withstand processing while still serving a purposeful nutritional role.
That is the heart of our CleanLabel™ pledge: pure, pronounceable, and purposeful.
If an ingredient is on a Clear Conscience Pet label, it is there for a reason.
The Gut-Brain Axis: Why Gut Health May Affect More Than Digestion
The gut is not just a food-processing system. It is connected to immune function, metabolism, and the nervous system.
This connection is known as the gut-brain axis.
The idea is simple but powerful: when the gut barrier, microbiome, and digestive environment are better supported, the whole body may become better supported too.
That does not mean a gut-health ingredient should be viewed as a sedative, drug, or behavioral cure. It means something more holistic:
A better-supported gut may help support a calmer, more resilient body.
That concept fits beautifully with what we have always believed at Clear Conscience Pet: nutrition is not just about calories, protein, or flavor. It is about helping the whole dog thrive.
Why This Matters for SuperGravy®
SuperGravy® was created to bring healthy joy to the bowl.
It helps transform ordinary meals into something dogs look forward to, especially picky eaters or dogs who need more mealtime encouragement. But SuperGravy® was never designed to be “just flavor.”
From day one, we built it around the belief that deliciousness and functional nutrition should work together.
That is why the evolution from Trigestive™ to Quadragestive™ matters. It reflects where modern pet nutrition is going: toward smarter, more complete support for the gut, immune system, and whole-body wellness.
And because SuperGravy® is cold processed, the functional ingredients that need protection are treated with the care they deserve.
Our Promise: Better, or We Do Not Make It
Clear Conscience Pet is a small, family-owned, independent company. We are not the biggest company in the pet industry, and we do not try to be.
But for 16 years, since our founding in 2010, we have worked to be among the most thoughtful, innovative, and trusted.
Our mission has always been simple:
If we cannot make a product that is better in every meaningful way, we do not bother to make it. If it is not the best, it is not CCP.
That principle has guided every product we create — from SuperGravy® to Sliders®, Lamb Airy Bark™, and Kelpy Chews™. It is also one reason Clear Conscience Pet has earned 31 awards since our founding.
And none of this would be possible without our treasured customer family.
Your commitment to the health and happiness of your precious animal companions is what makes it possible for a small independent brand to stay on the cutting edge of nutritional advancement.
As the science around postbiotics, the microbiome, and the gut-brain axis continues to grow, Clear Conscience Pet will continue doing what we have always done:
Studying carefully. Formulating thoughtfully. Innovating responsibly. And creating products that bring healthy joy to dogs every day.
Because making a difference for dogs is not a slogan.
It is what we do.
Every product. Every bowl. Every day.
